You must have passed your theory exam before
being able to book your practical exam.
It makes sense to book well in advance as waiting times are
long and it often takes a couple of months to be allocated a slot.
You can either
book you practical test online
or by calling the DSA on 0300 200 1122.
Overview
The practical driving test takes around 40 minutes and during that time,
you will be asked to demonstrate that you are a safe driver. You will be
asked to perform a number of special manoeuvres, such as reverse parking,
reversing around a corner and making an emergency stop. The examiner will
also ask you one "show me" and one "tell me" question. These questions aim
to make sure you know how to check that you car is safe to drive. The specific
"show me tell me" questions can be downloaded here.
Independent driving
From 4 October 2010, "independent driving" will become part of the practical driving test in the UK.
For about 10 minutes during your test you'll have to drive by either following a series of directions,
traffic signs, or a combination of both.
The examiner may show you a diagram to help you understand where you'll be going.
It doesn't matter if you don't remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way.
The purpose
is rather to assess your ability to drive safely whilst at the same time having to make your own
decisions in order to reach your target destination.
This includes for example deciding when it's safe to pull over and ask for directions.
Your result will not be affected unless you committ a driving fault, even if you go off the independent
driving route. Sat navs are not allowed for this part of the test.
Requirements
To pass, you must have no serious
faults and no more than 15 minor faults. Your
instructor will advice you when he or she believes you
are ready to take the practical exam. Given that
the current national average success rate is less than 45%,
it makes sense to be well prepared and make sure you have
taken sufficient number of lessons beforehand.
